Counseling Relationship: In reference to the counseling relationship, I see therapy as a partnership in which the client, and I, the counselor take part in working together to acquire a professional client/therapist relationship that includes mutual respect and trust. Once rapport has been established, I will be able to make assessments of the client’s specific needs, strengths and limitations by gathering information through observing both their verbal and nonverbal cues as well as engaging in active listening and so on. This will be done so that I, the therapist, can assist you, the client, in building, gathering and utilizing your own positive and undiscovered tools so that you can improve your overall well-being, reactions and approach to your individual life circumstances. In addition, you will make these positive changes by gaining awareness and implementing the skills learned to evoke positive change in thought, behavior, and spirit by also focusing on the restorative power of Jesus Christ.
Areas of Focus: My areas of focus include but are not limited to assisting clients who are living with depression, stress, anxiety, grief and loss, impaired self-esteem, past hurt, relational conflict, sexual trauma and other emotional trauma. This is done by supporting them in building their self-confidence, assisting them in learning how to set healthy boundaries, as well as by supporting them in developing healthy coping, decision making, and self-advocacy skills. I also assist clients in learning how to better express their concerns and frustrations by helping them to identify their individual right and the importance of doing so in a constructive manner which in turn, builds their confidence and promotes positive interpersonal skills. I am also trained in suicide intervention counseling.
Services Offered and Clients Served: I approach counseling from both a Christian and Person-Centered Perspective. From a Christian perspective, the counselor engages in active listening and gives the client encouragement, empowerment and feedback from a practical yet biblical perspective which also includes prayer and biblical scripture, etc. This therapy approach encourages the client to capitalize on the restorative power of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit which has proven to have great outcomes because it heals the spirit of a person which manifests its healing in all other areas.
With utilizing the Person-Centered approach, the client takes the lead in therapy and the therapist takes the non-leading role. This therapeutic approach encourages rapport between the client and counselor as well as increased self-esteem and increased ability to express feelings etc. In addition, when necessary, I approach counseling from a Cognitive Behavioral Perspective where the correlation between thoughts, feelings and behaviors are addressed with clients in order for them to gain insight on how their behaviors /outcomes stem from their feelings but initially, their thoughts. This therapeutic approach allows clients to learn the correlation between their thoughts, feelings and behaviors and allows them to put into action the art of reframing their thoughts and feelings in a positive way in order to address their issues from a healthier mindset which can enable them to have healthier outcomes and experiences.
